“Suck It Up” by Trevor Witt

Suck it up.
So you are twenty seven years old,
With a college degree,
And a couple years of work experience.
What does that make you?
Special?

Suck it up.
You think that the world was made for you?
Do you think the world owes you anything?
What have you done for the world?
Are you G-d? Are you the Higgs-boson particle?

Suck it up.
So you are intelligent.
Does that mean you should not have to work hard?
So you work hard.
Does that mean that everything should be yours?

So it is not fair.
Who told you life would be fair?

Suck it up.

If you have to,
Scrub toilets,
Mop floors,
Lay bricks.

Suck it up

Says the one sitting
In the driver’s seat
On top of the mountain
On the sidelines
On the couch
Watching television.

If wealth redistribution is the only way
To address inequality today
Because home prices are inflated
And credit card and student debt rises unabated
Then let the record reflect that it was you who stated

Suck it up.

“Radical, Revolutionary Love” by Trevor Witt

Radical, revolutionary,
Love,
Has never been tried before,
Not in the context of war.
No one dares to see the enemy’s face,
The only desire is to make them vanish without a trace.

Radical, revolutionary,
Love,
Sounds like a dream of the naive,
But only that dream can save us from ourselves.
Pain blinds us all,
It builds a mental wall.
Though I can see walls going up all around me,
I can see over them, through them, from up in my tree.

When you see only the enemy,
I see my friend from Arabic class.
When you see a war for self defense,
I ask, “how long will this defensive operation last?”
When you see an Israeli soldier,
I see my friends Idan and Jason with a heavy burden to shoulder.
When you see a Palestinian militant,
I see my friends whose families have lost their homes and lived in tents.
When you see a label,
I see a face, a family, scars and smiles, hopes and dreams.

Radical, revolutionary,
Love,
Tells us prisoners are not so different from you and me,
Criminals because they acted on thoughts we all think.
Radical, revolutionary,
Love,
Challenges us to see the humanity in our enemy.

“Skipping Stones On A Lake” by Trevor Witt

Memories,
Like skipping stones on a lake,
Create so much joy
By making ripples,
Ripples in the water of my mind,
Fading over time,
As their effects are not forgotten,
But diminish as they cross the lake.

Sunny days and sunsets
Spent skipping stones
With you by the lake
Forsake me in the present,
As only the ripples remain.

Walking through the farmers’ markets on Wednesdays,
Visiting you at work at the dry cleaners,
Buying you dinner because you hadn’t eaten all day,
Playing baseball at the park with you and my brother,
Confessing my love for you when drunk at the frat party.

All these ripples fade,
As the lake returns to its placid form.

“A Star Is Born” by Trevor Witt

Tomorrow,
That golden promise,
The day the wishing-well will prove its worth.

Love,
That shiny, glowing orb,
Radiating warmth and filling your head with endorphins.

Time,
Like water slipping through our hands,
Renewing us as long as we live, though we cannot grasp it.

My dusty dreams drift through the ether of the infinite,
Until they coagulate and stop the bleeding of my faith,
When they gravitate towards one another,
Building success upon small success,
Pulling distance towards the center,
They create a larger being,
The dream becomes real,
And a star is born,
Radiating Love.

“Masks” by Trevor Witt

Frowns,
Grins,
Smirks,
Raised eyebrows,
Open mouth, wide eyed, stare.

Masks which we use to convey
Our joy, our sorrow, our pain, our disgust,
Our surprise, our boredom, our interest, our lust.
Masks which we use to share our feelings with others.
Masks which we use to hide our true fears from them.

Not separate from our being,
But part and parcel of our body,
Our masks become our selves.
So take care to smile every once in a while,
For it would be a shame to turn into your frown.

“Puppy Love” by Trevor Witt

I’m tired of playing the victim.
And I’m tired of being your fool.
Though the pickings are slim and life is grim,
I am tired of you being cruel.

It started several years ago,
When you knew you had my heart.
Now the time has come to let you go,
And get me a brand new start.

Now I ain’t waiting around no more,
While you flirt with other guys.
It hurt me more than you’ll ever know,
But now I see through your disguise.

Now I’ve got a new best friend,
A girl whose love will never end.
She kisses me every time I get home,
And cries whenever I leave her alone.

She loves when I pet her,
And begs me to to feed her.
She licks my face all the time,
God I am glad that this sweet, little puppy is mine.

“Sunset Greets All” by Trevor Witt

The sun rises slowly,
Over Tehran and Jerusalem the same.
The birds begin to chirp,
People rise from their slumbers.
Off to work, they go.

Flowers bloom quietly,
In the cracks of the sidewalk,
In the yards and the gardens,
In front of houses and behind them.

Roses, birds of paradise, tulips outside.
I keep my orchids indoors.

The Jacaranda tree witnesses people pass by.
The orange trees see hurried travelers scurry to their destinations.

The sun goes down,
After shining upon Russians and Ukrainians alike,
After warming the beaches and the deserts,
The mountains and the valleys.

Sunset greets all.

“The Tao of Love”, “Everything is Fine”

“The Tao of Love” by Trevor Witt

You cannot force it.
You cannot fake it.
You cannot will it into existence.

You create it by letting go,
By giving in,
By giving,
Serving.

It allows a person to complete the most difficult tasks as though they were easy.
It allows a person to enjoy suffering, if that suffering is in its cause.
It is inexplicable, yet makes perfect sense,
Insane, yet completely rational.
It embraces all things,
Beyond good and bad,
It is Love.

By being devoid of expectations, it fulfills them all.
By being devoid of selfish desires, the self is expanded and happy.

Empty, yet full.
Selfish by being selfless.

Receiving by giving.

Obvious.

Unabashed.

Grateful.

Truthful.

Considerate.

Beyond description,
Beyond the words of poets,
Beyond the songs of singers,
Beyond the musings of storytellers,
Beyond all wisdom and all foolishness.

Simple.  Love.

“Everything is Fine” by Trevor Witt

Everything is fine.
There’s no more war.
There’s no more climate change.
I haven’t seen a homeless person in years.
Everyone is happy, appreciating the little miracles of life.

No child goes hungry.
No person is enslaved.
There are equal rights for all people, in every country.

No one fears terrorism anymore.
No one worries about nuclear war.

Income inequality is a thing of the past.

We see each other as brothers and sisters,
Living together for a short time upon a miraculous planet.

And then the alarm clock rang.
I woke up and ran off to work.

But I will continue dreaming – even while I am awake –
And I will try to make the dream come true as much as I can.
