“You Need To Hear This”

“You Need To Hear This” by Trevor Witt

I don’t want to hurt you –
But you need to hear the truth.

I’m afraid of how you’ll react.
Will you be able to bear my criticism?
Will I be able to bear your resentment?

How can I make you see
That you’re hurting yourself,
That you create one obstacle after another,
In your head, in your wallet, and in your relationships?

And it is all a function of fear.
All your distractions, all your insecurities,
They are all manifesting themselves from your fear.
But that is not what you want me to tell you; it’s not what you want to hear.

You want to hear that you are bombarded with difficulties –
I tell you that I understand, but
you must deal with them constructively,
rather than make excuses. and let the situation fester.

You want to hear that you are a victim of the poverty and psychological trauma –
I tell you that I know poverty and trauma, but
you must seek vindication of worth through your strength, intelligence, and talents,
rather than be a victim of your weaknesses, your folly, and your past.

You want to hear that there you are doing everything right,
That you are trying your best,
That there is nothing more you can do, BUT –
That’s not the truth.
And you need the truth.
You need to improve, to grow, to change.

But
You don’t need to hear it from me,
Though I can tell you all I want,
You must hear it from yourself.

“Lost Connection”

“Lost Connection” by Trevor Witt

Missing
Connection
Lost
Fraying social ties.

One brother moves north.
The other moves south.
Both are struggling economically,
But they try to follow the jobs.
My dreams have died.
But I try to revive them.

I see my cousins a few times per year.
A friend is studying for his PhD in France.
Another friend traveled to Japan to teach English.
One is in Utah, another in Ohio, another in Washington.

In a full room in a cafe, I feel alone.

“The Tao of Love”, “Everything is Fine”

“The Tao of Love” by Trevor Witt

You cannot force it.
You cannot fake it.
You cannot will it into existence.

You create it by letting go,
By giving in,
By giving,
Serving.

It allows a person to complete the most difficult tasks as though they were easy.
It allows a person to enjoy suffering, if that suffering is in its cause.
It is inexplicable, yet makes perfect sense,
Insane, yet completely rational.
It embraces all things,
Beyond good and bad,
It is Love.

By being devoid of expectations, it fulfills them all.
By being devoid of selfish desires, the self is expanded and happy.

Empty, yet full.
Selfish by being selfless.

Receiving by giving.

Obvious.

Unabashed.

Grateful.

Truthful.

Considerate.

Beyond description,
Beyond the words of poets,
Beyond the songs of singers,
Beyond the musings of storytellers,
Beyond all wisdom and all foolishness.

Simple.  Love.

“Everything is Fine” by Trevor Witt

Everything is fine.
There’s no more war.
There’s no more climate change.
I haven’t seen a homeless person in years.
Everyone is happy, appreciating the little miracles of life.

No child goes hungry.
No person is enslaved.
There are equal rights for all people, in every country.

No one fears terrorism anymore.
No one worries about nuclear war.

Income inequality is a thing of the past.

We see each other as brothers and sisters,
Living together for a short time upon a miraculous planet.

And then the alarm clock rang.
I woke up and ran off to work.

But I will continue dreaming – even while I am awake –
And I will try to make the dream come true as much as I can.
